Projeto Maré
Projeto Maré, created and directed by Angelica Monteiro, is a performance collective that opens a portal into the cultural and sociopolitical landscapes of the Amazon through dance, music, and poetry. Born from a collaboration between artists from the Brazilian Amazon, Maré investigates how the stories we inherit shape collective beliefs and social systems, and how those inhabit the multiple Amazons—a region composed of distinct geographies, peoples, and ways of being that coexist in tension and transformation.
At its core, Maré promotes the arts as a form of civic engagement—inviting dialogue at the intersections of culture, ecology, and justice. The project centers Amazonian epistemologies in global arts making and performance, positioning local knowledge, oral traditions, and embodied history as tools for reshaping our society. Maré partners with Curro Velho, an initiative from Fundação Cultural do Pará, sponsored by and is set to tour the Americas in 2027.

Nascido da colaboração entre artistas da Amazônia brasileira, Maré investiga como as histórias que herdamos moldam crenças coletivas e sistemas sociais — e como essas narrativas habitam as múltiplas Amazônias, uma região composta por geografias, povos e modos de existência que coexistem em tensão e transformação.
Em sua essência, Maré promove as artes como forma de engajamento cívico — convidando ao diálogo nas interseções entre cultura, ecologia e justiça. O projeto recentra epistemologias amazônicas na criação e na performance artística global, posicionando o conhecimento local, as tradições orais e a história incorporada como ferramentas para ressignificar nossa sociedade.
The Pillars
Maré is structured around three main pillars:
Performance & Research: artistic residencies that create and reshape Maré, a full-length piece performed by the Maré Movement Company. These residencies involve immersions into the Cuíra Method, a movement-based research framework developed by Angelica Monteiro that connects embodied research, Indigenous semiotics, and visionary fiction.
Education: a series of immersive dance and research workshops open to the general public, fostering cross-cultural exchange, reflection, and embodied learning.
Creative Economy: professionalization initiatives that support interdisciplinary artists from the Amazon, building sustainable creative infrastructures and strengthening local artistic networks.
Through these interconnected pillars, Maré centers community, memory, and resilience—seeking to celebrate the diversity and complexities of the Amazons and what they can bring to the world.
Os Pilares
Maré se estrutura em torno de três pilares principais:
Performance e Pesquisa: residências artísticas que criam e ressignificam Maré, um espetáculo de movimento apresentado pelo Coletivo Maré. Essas residências envolvem imersões no Método Cuíra, uma metodologia de pesquisa em movimento desenvolvida por Angelica Monteiro que conecta etnografia corporal, semiótica de Barthes e semiótica indígena com ficção visionária.
Educação: uma série de oficinas imersivas de dança e pesquisa abertas ao público em geral, promovendo troca intercultural, reflexão e aprendizado incorporado.
Economia Criativa: iniciativas de profissionalização que apoiam artistas interdisciplinares da Amazônia, fortalecendo redes artísticas locais e construindo infraestruturas criativas sustentáveis.
Por meio desses pilares interconectados, Maré coloca no centro a comunidade, a memória e a resiliência — buscando celebrar a diversidade e as complexidades das Amazônias e o que elas têm a oferecer ao mundo.
POROROCA Solos
Pororoca: a natural phenomenon that happens by the mouth of the Amazon River where fresh water meets ocean, creating massive waves of immense power.
Maré Project is an incubator for the Cuíra Method. A embodied storytelling composition philosophy that centers Amazonian strategies of expression and creation. Cuíra has four pillars: 1 - Embodied Research, the body as a primary source of knowledge and dance as an archive of histories and cultures. 2- Semiology, from Barthes to Indigenous dream sharing. 3- Visionary Fiction, concept developed by Walidah Imarisha. 4- Audience participation, everyone in the room is part of the show. The POROROCA solos is a showcase where dancers present the work they have created individually using the Cuíra Method.
